General Education The specialty of Internal Medicine begins with attaining a medical degree, followed by a hospital internship and residency program of several years' duration, working closely with experienced teaching internists. At this point in his or her career, the internist - in- training may take other special work, called fellowships, to gain more expert knowledge in such areas of practice as cardiology, gastroenterology, allergy, and pulmonary disease. After formal training comes rigorous examinations, called "internal medicine boards" that qualify him or her as a specialist in internal medicine (and, sometimes, as a sub-specialist in a particular type of diagnosis and treatment). He or she is then ready to begin the practice of internal medicine. Your internists is required to keep up with modern developments in disease prevention, treatment, and research by constant study of medical journals and books, taking postgraduate courses and attending medical meetings. Continuing education and constant learning becomes a way of life for today's internist.
